Lychee Slicer at ZBrush Summit 2023!

Do you love digital creation, digital sculpting, figurines, miniatures, video games, special effects and cinema? Are you curious about how it all comes together and works? Then come to the ZBrush Summit in Los Angeles from September 29th to October 1st for presentations about ZBrush, the leading digital sculpting software. If you’re a fan of figurines and miniatures, you’ve probably printed models created with this software, as the majority of creators use it!

And since 3D printing is closely connected to these worlds, the Lychee Slicer team will be on-site, hosting a dedicated 3D printing space. We’ll spend time with you to explain how it works, introduce you to the latest technologies, and give you the chance to win licenses for Lychee Slicer Pro Bundle!

In our space, we’ll have resin and filament 3D printers provided by Uniformation, including GK Two, an Apex Maker X1 that handles very (very!) large 3D prints quickly, an Anycubic M5S, and a Kobra 2 Max. We’ll keep these machines running non-stop and print 3D models created on-site as well.

Between presentations from globally renowned studios and artists like Square Enix (Final Fantasy), Capcom (Street Fighter), Blizzard (Diablo, Overwatch), Guerrilla Games, Disney/Lightstorm (Avatar 2), come talk to our specialists!

A quick note, Thomas, who will be on-site, is also a ZBrush expert and can answer all your questions as an artist using ZBrush and Lychee Slicer!

See you at the ZBrush Summit!

Introducing the Lychee Cleaner:
Your Solution for Quick Resin 3D Printer Tank Cleaning!

Resin 3D printing is amazing, but when things go wrong, the cleanup process can be a real hassle. To make this task more enjoyable, we proudly present the Lychee Cleaner! This nifty printable tool is designed to effortlessly remove the resin layer created by your printer’s “Clean Tank” function, which is responsible for capturing stuck bits at the bottom of the resin tank.

At Lychee Slicer, we perform numerous tests, and naturally, we frequently have to clean our resin tanks. The Lychee Cleaner, crafted with care, is here to make this step quicker, easier, and (hopefully) less frustrating.

Below, you’ll find usage instructions, helpful tips, and of course, the download link.

The Lychee Cleaner in Lychee Slicer, on the left, in printing orientation, on the right, ready to be used to clean your resin tank.

Printing the Lychee Cleaner

It’s a breeze, and the design is meant to be printed directly on the build plate. The Lychee Slicer 3D scene offers multiple instances of the same object. Feel free to print extras!

1. Download the 3D scene below and open it in Lychee Slicer.

2. In your resin settings, choose layer heights of 100 microns / 0.1 mm. Or even better, load a community resin profile).

If you’re using Lychee Slicer Pro, enable grey compensation with -0.4mm and 30% grey to minimize the elephant foot effect.

The important resin parameters: layer thickness at 100 microns and optionally, the resin compensation.

The small notch, to help you easily remove the Lychee Cleaner from the Build plate.

3. The Lychee Cleaner is disposable (sniff!), so there’s no need to use high-quality resin.

4. No anti-aliasing during export/slicing – it’s unnecessary, regardless of your 3D printer’s resolution.

5. Start the print… bzz bzzzz bzzzz bzz (x411 layers!).

6. Carefully remove the Lychee Cleaner from the build plate: there’s a small notch underneath, facing outward, to insert a spatula and gently pry it off.

7. Cure it under UV to ensure the Lychee Cleaner becomes rigid and its textured pads maintain their shape over time.

8. Now it’s ready to be used… for your next failed print (hopefully in the distant future, or never)!

Using the Lychee Cleaner

Follow these simple steps for successful resin tank cleaning using the Lychee Cleaner:

1. Raise or remove your build plate to prevent interference.

2. First, locate the corner of your screen at the bottom of the tank. This is crucial! Use a flexible silicone spatula (like a kitchen scraper, flat with an angle, it works better) to scrape a corner and find a screen corner gently. It’s usually NOT located at the tank’s corner but slightly offset (more or less).

The arrow indicates the corner of the screen.

As you can see, the small pads are on top of the screen AND outside of it at the same time.

3. Place the center of the Lychee Cleaner on this screen corner. The goal is to have pads over the screen and some extending beyond.

4. Apply only gentle pressure to insert the Lychee Cleaner; a light press is sufficient. Pressing too hard could potentially scratch the film (that’s not the intention!).

5. Activate the tank cleaning function, often named “Clean”, “Clean Tank”, “VAT Cleaning”, or “Screen Exposure”, for 20 to 30 seconds. All resin 3D printers feature this function.

6. If the Lychee Cleaner is properly positioned, it will fuse with the solidified resin layer at the bottom of the screen. Tilt it towards the screen center while gently lifting upwards – the corner should detach, leaving the solidified resin layer ready for removal.

Download the Lychee Cleaner

We encourage you to share these instructions rather than the download file itself with others (especially as updates may occur)!

By downloading and/or 3D printing the Lychee-Cleaner.lys file, you release Mango 3D / Lychee Slicer from all liability regarding its usage and any potential consequences it may have on your 3D printer if it is used improperly or if you fail to perform proper resin tank cleaning.

Important Notes on Resin Tank Cleaning

While the Lychee Cleaner is incredibly useful, it doesn’t do it all, and in some cases, it might not be sufficient on its own. Please read these notes carefully:

  • For prints with extensive debris at the tank bottom (not just flat bits), we strongly recommend using a paper paint filter to strain your resin. If solidified resin chunks remain in the tank that the “Clean Tank” function hasn’t captured (perhaps located outside the screen area or in suspension), they might get pressed against the screen during the next print, causing damage to the screen and the bottom film.
  • If you have substantial debris adhered over larger areas, consider using multiple Lychee Cleaners for different corners.
  • Feel free to gently slide a soft plastic / silicon spatula under the layer as you detach it; this can enhance effectiveness.
  • Never use hard plastic or metal spatulas inside your resin tank!

If you want to discuss these topics with us, join our Discord server and chat with the Lychee Slicer team and community.

Lychee Slicer is available for all users, either as a free version or with a Pro with a Premium Option. Download the latest version from our download center right now or update directly from Lychee Slicer.

Lychee Slicer Update – Projection Support, Hole Caps, Wi-Fi Support and much more!

Here is our latest update for Lychee Slicer! This update includes updates to both the Lychee Resin and Beta Filament Slicers and is jam packed with new features, bug fixes and support for new Resin printers. As usual, we are doing a recap with all that is included in this new release, so you will be ready to use Lychee Slicer! There will also be a livestream to show you all the features and some tips and tricks, all the details are at the end of this post!

If you wish to follow our development more closely and access our betas, we invite you to join our Discord server.
Our Discord community is very active and most of the team is present daily alongside our users.

Major features additions to Lychee Slicer Resin and Filament

We are now working on adding new features, for both the Resin and the Filament Slicers. There are some innovative features we have been secretly working on, alongside some features that have been requested from our community!

We would like to thank you all for your feedback, and your features request, as it is always helping us building a better Lychee Slicer and improving 3D Printing everyday!

Projection Support

[Resin – Pro and Premium]

Prepare your 3D model surfaces to be supported in a few clicks with the new Support Projection tool. It’s pretty easy and is especially suitable for flat or mechanical surfaces.

Define the surface to be supported via 3D painting or automatic surface detection, choose the structure of the outline and fill supports… and magic! Your supports have been created in seconds!

The cherry on top is that you can use your own Support Presets for outlines and infills, with the added bonus of creating the associated tags. Of course, if you have holes, the tool takes them into account to carefully avoid them.

Fast, simple, and efficient!

Converting Hollowings and Holes

[Resin – Pro and Premium]

Until now, Lychee Slicer only allowed you to export the model with its 3D hollowing and 3D holes. Now this operation can be done directly in the Prepare workspace to generate the holes within the 3D structure. This lets you, for example, put your supports through the newly created holes.
As an added bonus, you can keep the hole cap to print it and then more easily reseal it during the post-processing of your print.

Tip! You can continue to keep a 3D hollow and the associated holes dynamically and create the cap as a separate 3D object. This way, you can continue to have a non-destructive workflow for the recess and holes while printing the cap.

Copy and Paste Supports and Holes Settings

[Resin – Free, Pro and Premium]

If you like to tweak your advanced support settings to meet specific needs, you may be tempted to save a preset.

But when it’s just a one-time thing, there’s now a very quick and easy way to propagate those changes to other supports:
Select your support, do a Copy via the usual shortcut (CTRL/CMD+C), select the other supports you want to change, then do a Paste again via shortcut (CTRL/CMD+V).
You will then have the same parameters, such as the size of the tip or the type of base.

And it works the same with dynamic holes: select one, copy it, select other holes, then paste.
They will all have the same size and penetration parameters.

Fast, simple, and efficient! (Yes, again)

Wi-Fi support for Octoprint and Klipper with Webcam Support

[Filament – Free, Pro and Premium]

Lychee Slicer adds the ability to export via Wi-Fi your GCode files directly to your printer running Octoprint and Klipper. Say goodbye to temporary Gcodes and speed up your workflow!

Moreover, you will be able to control your printer and its web interface from within the application: access your Octoprint/Mainsail/Fluidd interface to launch your print, monitor it and even follow the process through your webcam connected to your printer.

And once again, fast, simple and efficient!

Other Improvements

Several minor improvements have been added in this version of Lychee Slicer

The Batch Tool is here to help you save time. With this feature, you can automate actions and tasks in order to focus on what’s really important for your 3D model preparation process.

Custom Filament 3D Printer

[Free, Pro and Premium]

Are you affraid of feeling stuck if you created your own Filament 3D Printer, or bought a new 3D Printer not yet supported and not being able to use it? With Lychee Slicer, you can create a Custom Filament 3D Printer easily in a few clicks. Just dial in your 3D Printer specifications and let’s print with Lychee Slicer!

Features and improvements for Lychee Slicer Resin

We are putting a lot of efforts in developping both Lychee Slicer Filament and Resin! In the last past releases, we developped new features and put a lot of efforts in improving and optimizing Lychee Slicer.

Currently, we are focusing a lot on improving Lychee Slicer in general. It means working a lot on the overall speed, stability, and any other kind of issues that are being faced by our users. We worked a lot for it, and it is only the beggining of theses improvements, so we hope you will like them!

Better Anti-Aliasing

[Resin – Free, Pro and Premium]

Anti-Aliasing has been enhanced and now provides better results along the XY plane. Also it improves the Blur antialiasing option that can be a good option for clean surfaces on models that don’t have tiny details.

Nothing changes on the interface. It’s simply a better result for your 3D print. It is only the beginning of these improvements, and there will be more in the future, this is just the first stage.

We now have two Anti-Alliasing: the “HD Anti-Alliasing” and the “Normal Anti-Alliasing”. They are both giving good results, please note that the HD Anti-Alliasing takes more ressources, so make sure your computer can handle it!

AA_LycheeSlicer

Major features additions to Lychee Slicer Resin and Filament

Suction Cup Detector

[Resin – Pro and Premium]

Have you ever said, “oh no, I think I forgot to add drain holes to my 3D print?” Well not anymore!
With this new feature, you can now detect if your print has suction cups that could lead to a print failure. Then, after adding holes to avoid this effect, you can reanalyze your model to ensure there won’t be any suction cups.

We came up with a fun project to create our office dino chairs, and share the 3D LYS files with you!

Banner_Chair

Here is the big project we have been working on!

These past weeks, you have probably seen some hints on our social media posts. We have been working hard on a unique project: printing our own custom office chairs! We completed everything in-house, from the design to the final sculpt and assembly! The good news is: it is scalable and printable in Filament and Resin! And we are now ready to release the pre-suported files for you!

Why did we decide to do this project?

Here at Lychee, we love being creative! You wil often see some of our creations on our Creative Fridays at the office posted on social media. However, we wanted to push that further to challenge our 3D printing creativity and originality in a project we can share it with our community!

Being creative has huge importance here in our offices. It makes us constantly search for new ideas and new horizons. Most importantly, it allows us users of our own product Lychee Slicer just like the community does on a daily basis. Because of this we have grown to love 3D printing and as such are always looking for ideas on how to improve Lychee Slicer for ourselves and our users.

Also, some team members are real dino lovers; we even have a former paleontologist on our team (can you guess who?😉)! This is why we first came up with the idea of of using dinosaurs as our design theme for this project.

T-Rex-2D Design

2D Designs of the T-Rex

Bouffe Q Design

2D Designs of the Hungrysaurus

So how did we get there?

Creating and printing these 3D chairs was a long creative process!

First, we needed to develop an idea to fit our office and be fun for our community to try too! We had some renovation work done in our offices in Bordeaux and Liège, and we wanted to add more fun and practical things to the office! Also, we often switch places in the office when we need to discuss things with each other, so we need to have something easily transportable, stackable, and amusing! As we said, we love dinos! So we quickly decided to go with some dino inspirations for the designs!

Then, we needed to sketch the first drafts. Daniel, our Artistic Director, made various drawings in 2D about how we could design our chairs. Here came the idea of the T-Rex and the Hungrysaurus! But there are also more designs we are working on!
We are fans of the art toy and cartoon culture, so going with this kind of design for our model was obvious! Also, it was easier to design and match the print constraints of this big print.

After the 2D design, let’s go to sculpting the models! Thomas, our CEO, who loves sculpting, turned Daniel’s drawings into 3D sculpts! If the choice of the Art Toy inspiration, it was pretty fast! But we needed to keep in mind the constraints exposed earlier! The chairs had to support the weight of adults who could sit on it.

Once the 3D sculpts were finished and validated, we moved on to the printing! We first tested on the model smaller prints to ensure the final result matched our expectations. Then, we started printing them their required full practical size! The final size of the chair is 42x42x50, so it’s a pretty big 3D print!

And now, we have our nice stools sitting in our office! Pretty cool, right?

So what challenges did we face?

To ensure the 3D sculpt could be successfully printed, we needed to create the 3D models while also keeping in mind the constraints of the 3D print, including whether it will be printed in Filament or Resin.

Another challenge was to design a model strong enough so we could sit on it, as its primary purpose was to have a chair. Jonathan and Thomas completed various tests during the design and development stages of the project. We also printed the 3D models in different sizes to limit the Resin or Filament waste if there were design issues.

After validating the 3D models, we needed to split the model up so it could be printed in different filaments colors or painted separately.

Finally, our biggest challenge was to print this big model! We did several tests to find a filament colour we liked and ordered huge spools to avoid running out! We printed for many hours on the giant 3D printer we had at the office: the Neptune 3 Max! To speed up the process, we also printed the separate parts of the model on different 3D printers.

It was challenging, especially for Jonathan, who was responsible for the printing, but we are thrilled with the result! These two models are only the beginning of our long list of chairs, with more already in the making!

What are our printing recommendations?

These models were designed to be printed in different sizes, in Filament or Resin.

If you want to print this model in a big size like us then don’t hesitate to print a test model to make sure your printing parameters so the final 3D print gives you the expected result.

Also, this model can be adapted and scaled in many ways: adult chair, kids chair, art toy, decoration… You can simply use the scale function to adjust the model to your needs or your 3D printer.

The model has been designed and sculpted in a specific way to fit the 3D printing constraints of Filament and Resin printers. We do not recommend splitting or modifying the model to ensure that all the 3D printing constraints and outcomes are respected.

If you want to print with a Filament 3D Printer, you can directly print it on the plate; you don’t need to add supports. If you prefer to print it in Resin, we have provided 3D models we prepared ourselves. These models are pre-supported, hollowed, and we tested the files here at the office to ensure the prints are successful!

Small Version Chairs

Finalized small versions of the Chairs, the T-Rex on the left and the Hungrysaurus on the right

Where can you get the 3D files?

You can directly download the 3D files by clicking on the button below.

As you may not wish to print the 3D model as a chair, we scaled these models to a smaller size of around 15x15x15 centimeters or 4x4x4. The Chair size is only available for Filament 3D Printers

You will get different LYS 3D files:

  • Filament: one-block model, no supports needed
  • Filament: split model, no supports needed
  • Resin: one-block model, pre-supported
  • Resin: split model, pre-supported

We can’t wait to see your prints and how you print these models! Please share your final prints with us on our social media so we can enjoy it too!

Enjoy your prints!

Note: please, when you download the files, take time to read the document attached.

LycheeSlicer_Interface

Filament 3D Printing

A dedicated interface, shared tools, and tools that are necessarily specific to the world of filament 3D printing. Lychee Slicer adapts to every 3D printing world.

There are hundreds of printers supported, and more to come. Is yours missing? Contact us!

We have integrated a concept of master printing profiles and child parameters to adapt to your objects to avoid tweaking the profiles as much as possible. And all this with graphics allows you to understand these parameters’ impact better.

Preview certain settings in real-time using the clipping bar, such as shell width modifications or infills, and visualize better the layers to be printed.

Easier 3D file preparation

Of course, the supports are not left out, with automatic or completely manual management. Pro users can go even further with the 3D manipulation Gizmo or the in-line supports.

Lychee Slicer filament is available as a Free version within Lychee Slicer resin, Pro or Free version. Add the Pro filament version to your Pro resin version, or have the filament version in Pro and the resin in Free. It’s à la carte!

Users of a Pro version have a discounted price for the other Pro version. Log in to your account to have the adapted prices.

As a reminder, this is a Public Beta version. As such, there are for sure some bugs, some are known to us, and we are working on these currently. However, there may also be some issues that we are unaware of. We always appreciate your continued testing of these beta releases to help us deliver a better final product.

LycheeSlicer_Parameters

Major features additions to Lychee Slicer

Oh, by the way, as we now have filament 3D printer supports,
some of these features are also part of both resin AND filament versions!

Planar Cut Tool

[Resin and Filament – Pro and Premium]

Wait, your 3D model is too big for your 3D printer? We’ve got your back!

With our new Planar Cut tool, you can define the position of the cutting plane then select the parts you want to split. Easy!

Split and Merge Tools

[Resin and Filament – Pro and Premium]

How many times have you needed to separate individual parts that are combined into a single model? Now separate them with a single click… Or if it’s the opposite and you want to merge multiple items into a single model, same process, a single click!

Better supports

More features have been added to give you more control over your support preparation

Inline_Supports

Inline Supports

[Resin and Filament – Pro and Premium]

Create supports on a line with simply a few clicks. A real time saver (dice creators will love that!)!

[Resin and Filament – Pro and Premium]

Create and save your own support presets. No need to create them every time!

Other Improvements

To keep it short, we also made many other improvements in Lychee Slicer.

Resin_Filament_Printers

Resin and Filament

  •  Auto Arrange tool now better considers the shape of the model and is more effective. Magic features take advantage of this feature.
  •  Mirror tool is now in the World orientation and not anymore in the local one.
  • We sped up a lot of tools and processes, like the application startup, scene loading, auto arrange, supports bracing and even the copy tool that had been sped up quite a lot in the previous update.
Resin_Printer

Resin Only

  •  A lot of cleaning has been made in the Community Resin tool. We still have some cleaning to do, but we are in the process of providing you with a great tool to help you find the best parameters for your 3D printer and resin combo.
  •  CTB based 3D printers using the V4 format can change the LED power in the resin settings.

New resin printers added

You have been waiting for them, here is a list of the latest additions!

  • Anycubic Photon D2
  • Anycubic Photon Mono X2
  • Anycubic M3 Premium
  • Elegoo Saturn 8K
  • UniFormation GKtwo

And more to come in our next updates!

LycheeSlicer_Printers

Bug fixes

We have addressed many bugs and issues, too many to list however here is a list of the most important ones.

  •  3D printing time estimation with printers using two stages movements (CTB V4 and recent Anycubic printers)
  • Resin estimation included support resin consumption even if the scene didn’t have support. This has been fixed.
  • Supports were ignoring drain holes when located inside of a hollowed model.
  • Visual artifacts and slicing issues when having too many supports (and bracing) on top of each other.

As always, we’ve made multiple quality of life changes and smaller additions throughout the application. Here are a few more of the numerous improvements we’ve added to this version of Lychee Slicer.

You can find the full changelog with all minor additions and bug fixes on our Downloads page.

Here are some words from our CEO.

A new chapter in Lychee Slicer’s story!

At Lychee, we like to communicate. You probably know this if you are part of our Discord or Facebook communities, where many team members and I interact daily with you.

This is an important time to update you on what’s been happening here at Lychee.

Firstly, we would like to thank you. Lychee Slicer has transformed, strengthened, and become a leader in the past two years. Maybe not in terms of the number of downloads, but clearly in terms of popularity and feedback from you all on social media. And it is only possible with this feedback, interactions, pictures of your 3D prints, and requests for new features that this has been possible.

If you have been following our recent announcements on social media, you may have noticed some exciting changes here at Lychee. We hope these updates will change the way you print too. If you have however missed these announcements, then today I am happy to fill you in on a major evolution of Lychee Slicer, which in addition to bringing lots of great new features to resin 3D printing, will now also bring support to filament 3D printing too.

The first two prints I did with Lychee Slicer, with the first build. It was not perfect, but not too bad for a first print! (Artillery Sidewinder X1 @200 microns)

But why on earth did we do this when there are already many (free!) slicers for filament printers? The question deserves to be asked, especially since there are currently other very popular and quality solutions available; let’s not hide it.

The answer is simple: we wanted to!

Throughout the team here at Lychee, there are fans of all types of 3D printing and the Maker space. The team has figure sculptors, painters, electronics fans, videographers, illustrators, and so on. We work in this universe because we love it above all. And we’ve been printing in both resin and filament for years.

To best explain this, let me talk about Julien and myself a little so you can see our vision for the Lychee and to better understand our software.

Julien is our Chief Technical Officer (CTO), but above all co-founder of the company and creator of Lychee Slicer. Before founding the company, he worked for a filament 3D printer manufacturer and created his own resin 3D printer in his spare time. He didn’t just assemble components, he designed the entire machine top to bottom, including developing the motherboard, the operating system and of course, developing the slicer to go along with it. With this, ‘The Moka’ was born… and this in 2017!

The Moka First and last prototype. Full custom acrylic cover, 2K screen, touch screen (one of the first), also with a magnetic resin tank, running Mango OS.

On my end, I’m first and foremost a 3D sculptor/modeler who drifted into marketing and then management. After moving on from working at the leading publisher of 3d sculpting software, I became the CEO of Lychee Slicer. However, I’m not primarily a businessman. My passion is still sculpting, training, and sharing with others.
Thankfully I have the luxury of running, with the help of Julien and Clement, our president, a company that makes software that can convert designs, including mine, into real-world models and largely according to our vision. It couldn’t be better!

With this in mind, the addition of support for filament printers was just the logical next step in the evolution of Lychee Slicer.

So yes, we have work ahead of us to match other slicers. Now, do we want to take them on head-on? Not necessarily, as there is plenty of room for us all in the market. There is currently an impressive number of 3D printer users, and this number grows by the day. Many of these users just want to print without spending years tweaking a profile and just want their slicer to work from day 1. Or others, who want more control, but not too much, because the most important thing to them and many others is just being able to enjoy printing while not getting too frustrated by things becoming too technical. With this in mind, we integrated the filament slicer straight into the existing Lychee Resin slicer. Allowing for seamless transitioning between Resin and Filament slicing.

Before anyone asks, no, Lychee Slicer resin development will not stop, far from it. We will slow down a little bit in the immediate future to make the filament version stable and to integrate your first feedback as soon as possible. Both are equally important to us, and because of this, we have recently, thanks to your continued support, grown the team here at Lychee. With these extra team members, we have been able to bring you all these latest changes and will continue to do so into the future.

I want to thank the entire Lychee team, including those behind the scenes who keep the company moving forward. A lot of work has been done in the last two years to get us to where we are today. But also our families, who sometimes don’t see us too much, we thank them too.

I also want to thank the creator of Kiri:Moto, the slicing engine we use in Lychee Slicer, for his work and involvement. He is a person who is just as passionate as we are and who has done a phenomenal job and given us all his support. Now that the project has been announced, we will start publishing our changes and adding bricks to the building.
Don’t hesitate to look at his tools; there are some gems!

Now that the year 2022 is slowly ending and us announcing this big change, we are also getting ready to move on to other big projects while still actively continuing the development of Lychee Slicer, now both resin and filament!

Please take this opportunity to give us your thoughts on Discord and Facebook, we eagerly await your feedback.

Thanks to all of you for being a part of the Lychee family!

Thomas – CEO
